SHOW SYNOPSIS

The world’s longest-running play!  Running for over 73 years, over 30,000 performances!

After a local woman is murdered, the guests and staff at Monkswell Manor find themselves stranded during a snowstorm. It soon becomes clear that the killer is among them, and the seven strangers grow increasingly suspicious of one another. A police detective, arriving on skis, interrogates the suspects: the newlyweds running the house; a spinster with a curious background; an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef; a retired Army major; a strange little man who claims his car has overturned in a drift; and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone. When a second murder takes place, tensions and fears escalate.

This record-breaking murder mystery features a brilliant surprise finish from Dame Agatha Christie, the foremost mystery writer of her time.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

REGARDING ACCENTS AND ETHNICITY:

Accent/dialect work is important in this show, and we want to see your best attempt at the correct accent for each character. Perfection isn’t needed, we just want to see how well you can attempt it. You may be asked to perform the scene with and without the accents, so we can judge acting ability.  Your ability to do the accent is more important than whether or not you look like a stereotypical British/American, etc. Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to attend.

REGARDING AGES

Ages refer to how the character will be perceived, not necessarily the age of the actor.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

MOLLIE RALSTON – (Female Identifying Character, 20’s-30’s) A newlywed who has inherited Monkswell Manor and has opened it as a guesthouse with her husband. A hospitable and warm, if slightly naive, hostess and cook.

GILES RALSTON – (Male Identifying Character, 20’s-30’s) The more cautious proprietor of Monkswell Manor. Supportive of his wife, but less thrilled to run a guesthouse. A traditional gentleman who’s quick to judge his guests.

CHRISTOPHER WREN (Male Identifying Character, 20’s)– A young architect with a flamboyant and often inappropriate sense of humor. His energetic conversation can appear both lighthearted and sinister.

MRS. BOYLE – (Female Identifying Character, 40+) A retiree whose acerbic tone makes her a challenging guest. Strong-willed and uncompromising, with high expectations. Pleased only when expressing disappointment.

MAJOR METCALF – (Male Identifying Character, 40+) An affable guest who is willing to help his hosts cope with the consequences of the snowstorm. Retired from the army, steady and calm in the face of conflict.

MISS CASEWELL – (Female Identifying Character, 20’s) A modern and somewhat aloof young woman traveling on business. Unwilling to discuss private matters and disinterested in the opinion of her fellow guests.

PARAVICINI – (Male Identifying Character, 40+) A roguish gentleman who is not forthcoming about his reasons for being there. Delights in the guests’ uncertainty and pays particular attention to his hostess, Mollie.

DETECTIVE SGT. TROTTER – (Male Identifying Character, 20’s) The young detective assigned to reach Monkswell Manor and report on the situation as it unfolds. Determined and authoritative in his pursuit of the truth.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Twenty-two years ago, Kristi Scott relocated to Maui, convinced that she was leaving her theater career behind. However, her passion for the stage proved irresistible, leading her to direct her inaugural Maui production, “Meshuganuns,” for Maui OnStage. Since then, Kristi has made a significant impact on the local theater scene, directing a diverse array of acclaimed plays and musicals, including “Sweeney Todd,” “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” “Doubt,” “Blithe Spirit,” “Bermuda Love Triangle,” “Social Security,” and “39 Steps.”

In addition to her directorial achievements, Kristi is the visionary behind the Maui OnStage ONO program, which she originated and continues to curate. She is also a founding member and an active performer with Free Range Comedy in Kihei.
