Shakepeare Festival, TheaterWorks, and New Conservatory Theater.
As well as acting, Kristi is also a director and teacher. For Maui
OnStage. She directed Meshuggah-Nuns!, Sweeney Todd;
the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, A Funny
Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and
Blithe Spirit. She was seen in Maui
OnStage's productions of Daddy's Dyin'...Who's
Got The Will?, You Can't Take
It With You and

Louis
Fernandez III (Technical Director & Facility Manager),
a Maui native, returns to the island after 10 years of working theatre
on the mainland with wife Krista to accept the Technical Director
position with Maui OnStage. Louis originally worked at the IAO Theater
during his Maui Community College days over 13 years ago. Louis
has a Bachelor of Arts in Technical Theatre from the University
of Northern Colorado. Louis returned home to Maui for one year upon
graduating freelancing events such as the Mercedes Golf Classic
at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, the Mercedes Car Dealer Show
at the MACC and various other venues like concerts and theme parties.
Louis also installed stage equipment for 'Ulalena
before its successful run here on Maui. Louis accepted a position
in the fall of 1999 at the Denver Center Theatre Company which in
1998 won the Tony Award for Best Regional Theatre, as a scenic technician.
Louis worked at the DCTC from 1999 until present working his way
up to the position of Lead Carpenter with a crew of six. Louis was
involved with the collaboration of the DCTC with Sir Peter Hall
and his Royal Shakespeare Company to mount the world premiere epic
of Tantalus. This massive spectacle required
a transformation of an arena stage called The Space Theatre into
a high security museum for priceless antiquities shipped from Greece
to promote Tantalus, which included a
16 foot square plexiglass floor that housed a scale model of one
of Greece's prominent amphitheatres. Louis dealt with the installation
of the museum in its entirety which prevented him from building
scenery for Tantalus but he did have 25
tons of sand to hand mix and spread across the mainstage thrust
theatre housed in the Denver Center called The Stage Theatre. Amongst
many outstanding achievements, one that Louis holds in high regard
is his IATSE membership in Local #7 in Denver, Colorado. For Maui
OnStage, Louis has built Pump Boys and Dinettes, Meshuggah-Nuns!,
Daddy's Dyin'...Who's
Got The Will?, Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Little
Shop of Horrors, The Mystery of Irma Vep, You Can't
Take It With You, A Funny
Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, The Full Monty, Blithe Spirit
and The King & I. Up
next for Louis is Once on this Island
with director Brian Swasey.
Krista
Fernandez (Resident Scene Designer & Administrative/Marketing
Head) joins Maui OnStage with husband, Louis, originating
from Arizona. Krista attended the University of Arizona in Tucson
earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Scene Design/Scene Painting.
Krista quickly became a strong scenic artist under the tutelage
of one of two prominent Chinese painters, Mr. Xuzheng He. Krista
has worked as a scenic artist all over the country and spent five
years in residence with the Music Theatre of Wichita under the second
prominent Chinese painter, Mr. Shanfu Zhao. Mr. Zhao was the former
Art Director for China's Beijing Opera as well as being Xuzheng's
and her mentor. Krista earned her Master of Fine Arts in Scene Design/Scene
Painting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Hall Family
Foundation Professor John Ezell spent three years coaching, molding
and creating scenic dynamos during Krista's residency with him at
UMKC. Upon graduating from UMKC, Krista attended Ming Cho Lee's
Annual Clambake competition in New York City amongst his own Yale
students to battle out interviews and jobs with the best of the
best in New York. From NYC, Krista accepted a teaching position
for one year at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. There Krista
taught six classes in scene design and scene painting, she designed
two shows, A Midsummer Night's Dream and
Coppelia along with being Charge Scenic
Artist for over 15 productions that academic year. Krista was also
able to freelance with a local architectural model making company
to assist in the building of the Oklahoma City National Bombing
Memorial scale model. It was prominently featured in TIME Magazine
and toured all over the world as a fundraiser to support the building
of the actual monument dedicated to the victims of the Oklahoma
City bombing. Krista accepted a position in the fall of 1999 with
the Tony Award Winning Best Regional Theatre, the Denver Center
Theatre Company. Krista worked as a scenic artist in both the properties
and paint shops for three years. Many shows stand out to Krista
from her residency at the DCTC but definitely Tantalus
ranks among the highest. Sir Peter Hall and his Royal Shakespeare
Company were in attendance in Denver to produce the massive epic
spectacle that took audiences over 10 hours to view in entirety.
Krista was one of two scenic artists to sculpt an eight foot sphere
of Apollo's head for Sir Peter Hall upon which he congratulated
her with enthusiastic praise. Krista accepted a position at the
University of Northern Colorado as the Opera Technical Director/Properties
Director for two and a half years. Krista supervised a prop crew
of five undergraduate students to assist her with over 20 productions
during an academic year. Krista designed A View From
The Bridge after taking a long hiatus from designing
upon graduating from UMKC. Krista also designed Rhinoceros
at the University of Colorado at Denver. At Maui OnStage,
Krista is the resident scene designer and has designed Pump
Boys and Dinettes, Meshuggah-Nuns!,
Daddy's Dyin'...Who's Got The Will?, Sweeney Todd: The
Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Little Shop
of Horrors, The Mystery of Irma Vep,
You
Can't Take It With You, A Funny Thing
Happened On The Way To The Forum, The
Full Monty, Blithe Spirit, The
Foreigner and The King &
I. Up next for Krista is designing Once
on this Island with director Brian Swasey.
